Staining

Staining

Concrete staining is a popular option to give a standard concrete floor a whole new look. Staining will usually have a final clear polyurethane coating applied to the surface to minimize wear and fading. There are essentially three types of staining used on concrete floors, and they differ somewhat in their use and appearance.

Acid staining — provides a mottled appearance in primarily earth tones. It is a permanent color treatment that wears well and won’t chip or peel. The acid stain reacts chemically with the lime in the concrete using metallic salts. The result can appear like leather, marble, stone, or even hues like the ocean. It can be applied to existing or new concrete.

Water-based staining — Creates a more consistent color pattern on the concrete using liquid-based stains with low volatile organic compounds (VOCs). They can be prepared in almost any color hue and can be used both indoors and out with the addition of UV stabilizers.

Dye stains — For interior concrete, both existing and overlays, dye stains are an effective way to create either a uniform color or complex color patterns using multiple colors. The dyes penetrate deeply into the concrete and are very durable.
