Yes. Most worn Shellcrete pool decks can be brought back with a deep clean and a fresh coat of sealer, and damaged areas can be repaired. If the slab underneath is sound, a brand-new Shellcrete topping can also go right over it. A look at the deck tells you which one you need.
What Shellcrete is
Shellcrete is a decorative concrete topping made with white Portland cement, sand and shell mined on Florida’s west coast. You may also hear it called tabby, coquina or washed shell concrete. It reflects the sun’s heat, adds traction and gives a pool deck a natural beach look.
Signs your Shellcrete needs attention
- The color looks faded or chalky
- Stains from leaves, rust or pool chemicals
- Water no longer beads on the surface, a sign the sealer has worn off
- Cracks or areas where shell has come loose
Small natural voids in the shell are normal. They are part of the look and do not hurt durability.
Your three options
- Clean and reseal. For decks that are just dull or stained. Outdoors, Shellcrete should be resealed every 2 to 3 years anyway.
- Repair. For cracks and damaged areas on a deck that is otherwise in good shape.
- New topping. For decks that are worn out. If the slab is sound, we prepare the surface and install a new topping 5/8 to 3/4 inch thick.
How a new Shellcrete topping goes in
We prepare the old surface so the new layer bonds, place the shell mix in forms, seed more shell into the top, and expose it as the concrete sets. Control joints are cut to match the slab below. After curing, the shell is lightly ground to remove sharp edges, cleaned and sealed.
Caring for Shellcrete
- Sweep often and mop with a pH-neutral cleaner
- Avoid harsh chemicals and abrasive pads
- Reseal every 2 to 3 years outdoors
